グーグル ジャパンは13日、災害救助や安否確認の支援を目的とし、GeoEye社の人工衛星「GeoEye-1」が撮影した被災地の衛星写真を公開した。Google Earthで閲覧できるほか、Picasaアルバム（https://picasaweb.google.com/118079222830783600944/Japan#）には、地震の発生前後の衛星写真がアップロードされており、地震と津波による生々しい被害の様子がおさめられている。

　グーグルはこれまでに、東北地方太平洋沖地震の発生を受け、安否情報登録・確認サイト「Google Person Finder」（http://goo.gl/sagas）や、地震関連情報を一括掲載する「Google Crisis Response」（http://www.google.co.jp/intl/ja/crisisresponse/japanquake2011.html）を提供している。「Google Person Finder」は、新に短縮URLが作成されており、携帯電話からのアクセスが容易になっている。また被災地の避難所情報をグーグルマップ上にまとめている（http://www.google.co.jp/intl/ja/crisisresponse/japanquake2011_shelter.html）。
