大相撲の八百長問題に揺れる日本相撲協会は６日、東京・両国国技館で臨時理事会を開き、大阪府立体育会館（大阪市浪速区）で３月１３日に初日を迎える予定だった春場所の開催中止を決めた。

　八百長疑惑には十両力士ら１４人の名前が挙がり、親方、力士の計３人が関与を認めている。

　本場所の中止は、国技館改修工事の遅延で夏場所を開催できなかった１９４６年以来、６５年ぶり。不祥事による中止は初めて。

　野球賭博問題が起きた昨年の名古屋場所では、場所前に関与した力士らを処分して開催にこぎ着けた。しかし、今回は、解明に当たっている特別調査委員会（座長＝伊藤滋・早大特命教授）の調査には時間がかかることから、場所開催を中止して実態解明による信頼回復を優先させた。調査委は今後、１４人の力士らから提出された銀行などの預金通帳や、提出を求めている携帯電話の通話の解析などを行って詳細な調査を進める。

　相撲協会の放駒理事長はこの問題の発覚後、「ファンの皆さまに理解してもらえない状態で（場所を開催して）いいのか、考えなければいけない」と春場所開催に慎重な姿勢を見せていた。
