地上３５０キロ・メートルの国際宇宙ステーション（ＩＳＳ）で２００８年１１月から８か月半、保管した桜の種を、地上へ持ち帰って植えたところ、発芽しないはずの種が芽を出すなど、異変が相次いでいることがわかった。

　原因は不明だが、無重力で放射線の強い宇宙環境で、遺伝子の突然変異や、細胞が活性化したなどの見方もある。

　宇宙を旅した桜の種は、北海道から沖縄まで１３地域の子供たちが集めた名木１４種類。このうち岐阜市の中将姫(ちゅうじょうひめ) 
誓願桜(せいがんざくら)は、樹齢１２００年と言われるヤマザクラの一種で、米粒ほどの小さな種は、地元の保存会などがまいても発芽せず、接ぎ木でしか増やせなかった。

　保存会が種２６５粒を宇宙に送り、２４８粒をまいたところ、昨年春に２粒が発芽した。このうち、１０センチの苗木に成長した１本は、葉の遺伝子の簡易鑑定で「他の桜の種が混入したのではなく、誓願桜の可能性が高い」と判定された。

　岡山県では、通常は１年に５０センチ程度しか伸びない真庭市の醍醐桜(だいござくら)１０本が、昨年春に発芽して、今は９０センチ以上。うち１本は１６０センチを超えた。高知県佐川町では、１年に約３０センチしか伸びないはずの稚木桜(わかきのさくら)が、約１年で最高１３５センチに成長した。
