2011年2月18日、孔子の第75代直系子孫で日中関係評論家の孔健（こう・けん）氏は「石から紙が作れる？中台合弁企業が生産を開始」と題した記事を 中国のブログサイトに発表した。以下はその概略。

石からできた紙、「ストーンペーパー」を作るプロジェクトが中国・安徽省淮北市で始動し た。年産36万トンを目指すという。この「石からできた紙」の主成分は石灰岩で、これに無毒のポリエチレンと助剤が加えられる。紙パルプを使わないから自 然を破壊しないで済み、環境に優しい。

普通の紙と違うのは、耐水性に優れ、腐ったり虫がついたりせず、燃えにくく破れにくい。生産の過程 で水を使わないので排水もない。漂白剤を使っておらず石灰岩の自然の白さが生かされている。そのまま廃棄されても数カ月で石灰岩へと分解し、自然にかえる そうだ。

台湾の専門家によると、石灰岩の含有量が半分を超えるものだけが「ストーンペーパー」と称することができるが、安徽省のものは含 有量70～80％だ。「ストーンペーパー」の生産が始まった淮北市は安徽省北部に位置する都市で、国家資源型都市転換モデル都市に指定されている。（翻 訳・編集/NN）
