まだ日本未上陸なので、聞き慣れない人も多いだろうが、グーグルTVとは、インターネット上のコンテンツが楽しめる新感覚のテレビ。スマートフォ ンでおなじみになったアンドロイドOSを搭載し、ウェブサイトを閲覧できるほか、アンドロイド用のアプリをテレビで楽しめる。すなわち、テレビとウェブコ ンテンツを一台でこなす“スマートテレビ”といえる、驚きのマシンなのだ。
実は、アメリカではひと足早く、昨年の冬に世界初のグーグルTVが商品化されている。その名も「Sony Internet TV」シリーズ。ラインナップは、テレビ一体型の「Sony Internet TV」とブルーレイディスクプレーヤー内蔵型の「Sony Internet TV Blu-ray Disc Player」の2種で、後者は通常のテレビにつなげてグーグルTVの機能が利用できる。このSony Internet TVが優れているのは以下の4点だ。
まずは、デュアルビュー機能により、テレビの視聴とインターネットの操作がひとつの画面上で可能な点。つまり、サッカー放送を見ながら、その試合 についてツイッターでつぶやくことも可能なのだ。2点目は、ブックマーク機能があり、テレビ、ウェブサイト、アプリの垣根を越えて、自分の好きなコンテン ツリストを画面上にカスタマイズできるということ。3点目は、アンドロイド端末をリモコン代わりに使える点。専用アプリをダウンロードすれば、自分のスマ ホでグーグルTVが操作できる。そして、最後の1点はリーズナブルな価格。参考までに、アメリカでの販売価格を現在（3月4日）の為替レートで計算する と、Sony Internet TVの32V型サイズで約6万6000円。Sony Internet TV Blu-ray Disc Playerは3万3000円と、現在、日本で発売されているテレビやレコーダーと比較しても安価で、なおかつグーグルTVの機能が楽しめるのだから、お 得感も倍増だ。
地デジの買い替え期真っ盛りなだけに、日本で地デジチューナー搭載のグーグルTVが発売されれば、テレビ市場を揺るがす存在になるのは間違いな し。そこで気になるのは、日本での発売時期だが、記者がグーグル日本法人に問合せたところ、「現在発表はございません」という返答。日本でグーグルTVを 楽しめる日は、まだ当分先のようだ。
