現在、チンパンジーの取引はワ シントン条約で厳しく規制されている。絶滅の恐れがあるとして、条約では最も厳しい「附属書1」というリストに記載され、商業目的での国際取引は完全に禁 止だ。ちなみにチンパンジーやゴリラといった霊長類の肉の流通量は、取引される肉の「1％未満」と言われているという。

こうした違法取引 が止まらない原因として、ロウクリフ博士は野生動物の肉が「単に消費のために流入するのではなく、薬や富を表すステータスシンボルとして扱われるた め」（サンデー・マーキュリー紙より）と指摘。また、違法なルートで持ち込まれた野生動物の肉が「伝染病をもたらす可能性がある」として、強い警告を発し ている。
